The transdisciplinary approach of analysis, planning, and design is integrated with a Living Lab model. This concept is used as a ground for research and experimentation, where regular workshops will enable direct dialogue with local dwellers to take place. Through this participatory approach, the intention is to enable interactions and communication between designers, dwellers, and stakeholders, an engagement which ensures knowledge uptake as well as learning about the way of living and specific needs of local dwellers. The Living Lab is to function as a field lab to gather research input together with the relevant stakeholders and to use as an experimentation ground for various co-design and co-creation actions during the four years of the research. The Living Lab as a method is completely new in Ethiopia, and it will create capacity to improve and retain the skills, knowledge, tools and equipment needed to design resilient and inclusive dwelling clusters in Addis Ababa. It will be the designated site for research, experiments, communicating and performing participatory action research. Most importantly, the collaborations and knowledge fostered in the Living Lab will be key tools for the design development of the Pilot Project.
Structure
The Addis Ababa Living Lab is uniquely structured to instigate a collaborative research setting. In order to ensure a successful development with balanced contributions from all parties, the research was organized into four work packages that not only offer a set framework, but also ensure that all target topics are sufficiently explored. The four work packages are the following:
[WP1] Patterns of Inhabitation
[WP2] Urban Resettlement
[WP3] Participatory Planning and Design
[WP4] Holistic Approach to Urban Resettlement
