Seeking to respond to short-term housing solutions that favor efficiency over sensitivity and standardization over flexibility, this project proposes a collaborative approach that engages dwellers in the design and construction of their homes. Rather than site-specific, “An Architecture of Enablement” by Zhuo-ming Shia focuses on formulating a new standard of housing applicable city-wide, perhaps even nation-wide. Via a network of different scales of association, it suggests that current methods of housing production can be adopted in initial phases of construction, while participatory design can in fact take place at a later stage on a smaller scale. This ideological shift from ‘housing product’ to ‘housing process’ aims to create a win-win situation, meeting immediate housing demands and sowing the seeds for a cohesive and loved home for communities. Deservedly so, this project was awarded different prizes, including renown DAIDA and MiG awards.
