A product of the Global Housing Research Seminar, the story of ‘Kolfe Low-cost Housing Site’ is the result of a micro-ethnographic research based on a student visit to Kolfe district in Addis Ababa. With architectural tools translated into comic-like graphics, it depicts the parallels between everyday life and its influence on one’s built environment. Separated into three chapters, the novel accompanies the community’s tradition of Ekub meetings, in which members of a group make equal contributions for the collection of a pot of funds to be later distributed to a randomly selected participant. The three-fold story accompanies different experiences of Ekub winners, depicting the various life-changing events that may result from the tradition.
