While acknowledging that proper housing may not provide equity amongst different economic groups, “The New Arrival City of Addis Ababa” explores the possibility that proper housing can influence more equal levels of social acceptance amongst different socio-economic groups. By carefully identifying the diverse needs between urban dwellers and rural migrants, Subačiūtė proposes spatial amenities that could not only create possibilities for income-generation, but also provide opportunities for encounters that may fulfill the needs of all residents. Placing people and human rights at the forefront of urban sustainable development, the proposed design focuses on fostering a place where low-income groups may feel empowered to achieve more in their future, providing economic growth and urban prosperity that may increases the participation of all in the collective development of a more receptive city.
