Even within an urban context, traditions, economic activities, and their social structure are highly attached to the rural domain, which is reflected in the ‘’ruralization’’ of urban areas such as Addis Ababa. Through a deeper understanding of how the city’s traditional practices are rooted in the countryside, “Recomposing the city fragments of Addis Ababa: Physical re-weaving of Addis from a social perspective” studies the daily activities fostering this juxtaposition and fragmentation of land. Emphasizing the proliferation of informal economies and the unforeseen urban growth where lower and higher-income groups live side by side, Barbero proposes an inclusive scenario that fosters a sense of appropriation for one’s living environment. The design seeks to dignify the lives of the current residents and newcomers harmoniously by granting the same accessibility to decent homes and healthy environments.
