With consideration to the socio-spatial layers that characterize both urban and rural layers of Addis Ababa, “People, Patterns, and Practices” touches upon key cultural factors linked to aspects of ruralisation. Focusing on rural migrants and the harsh conditions faced upon their arrival to the city, Hatice brings to light the relevant rural-oriented concepts like villagisation, agrarianisation, or peasantisation, highlighting their relevance in response to rapid urbanization. With attention to spaces in relation to collective activities of different scales, this investigation uncovers the spatial factors affecting the quality of life of these city newcomers and explores potential tools for its improvement. Proposing a design that explores concerns relating to the hierarchy of roads, use of communal spaces, and relationship between plots, the project highlights important patterns of everyday life in connection to a rapidly changing urban tissue.
