Amongst the many outcomes of the Addis Ababa Living Lab project, the PhD researches certainly hold a primary role. As the main products of work packages WP1 and WP2, the topics targeted in these parallel researches hold very close ties to the purpose and mission that delineate the project as a whole. Diving into two different scales of ethnographic studies, these dissertations follow themes of extreme relevance to the culture of dwellers in the Addis Ababa region, exploring subjects that include the impact of current urban developments approaches, as well as socio-cultural factors within local spatial practices. Of the four objectives delineated within the project, two are explicitly targeted in the themes explored within these PhD dissertations. The objective of mapping patterns of inhabitation through the surveying of social and spatial practices will be reflected in the explorations of PhD 1, which will establish the benchmark for sustainable dwelling practices, and will be critically integrated in the design of the pilot dwelling clusters. On the other hand, PhD 2 will target the development of urban resettlement projects, seeking fundamental knowledge about the loopholes that inhibit positive feedbacks in current processes of planning, implementation and management of urban resettlement projects. As a result, the products of these dissertations will provide tangible tools for the creation of inclusive and resilient housing alternatives for Addis Ababa.
