Amongst the range of objectives within the project, the primary one is to improve the livelihood of Addis Ababa’s urban dwellers using transdisciplinary approaches of analysis, planning, and design. The intention behind this is to create a better understanding of the current dwelling communities in order to protect the self-reliance, dignity and the overall quality of life of inhabitants. Through such pursuits, the project’s overall goal can be defined in three parts: (1) providing adequate, safe, healthy, and affordable housing, (2) improving skills and capacity of local planners, developers and contractors for co-creation, (3) increasing the knowledge for implementing integrated policies and housing programs towards resource efficiency, technical optimization, and use of local materials in combination with good maintenance. The above-mentioned goals are largely reflective of the project’s aim to target concerns related to rapid urbanization. African cities are thus confronted with the problem of accommodating the rapidly growing urban populations in inclusive cities, providing them with adequate shelter and basic urban services, while ensuring environmental sustainability, as well as enhancing economic growth and development. Seeking solutions for these issues is precisely the purpose of the Addis Ababa Living Lab project, aiming to address the various problems with current urban resettlement patterns.
Approach
The transdisciplinary approach of analysis, planning, and design is integrated with a Living Lab model. This concept is used as a ground for research and experimentation, where regular workshops will enable direct dialogue with local dwellers to take place. Through this participatory approach, the intention is to enable interactions and communication between designers, dwellers, and stakeholders, an engagement which ensures knowledge uptake as well as learning about the way of living and specific needs of local dwellers. The Living Lab is to function as a field lab to gather research input together with the relevant stakeholders to use as an experimentation ground for co-design initiatives.
