Bringing to light the rural issues parallel to rapid urbanization concerns in Addis Ababa, “Common Ground: Vernacular Livelihoods and Rural Urban Migration” sets focus on the livelihoods of  local farmers who are forced to move out of the city. With special attention to the relocation of informal neighborhoods in and around the Ethiopian capital, this investigation targets the resulting interruptions and social context losses experienced by rural-urban migrant dwellers.Through a design that proposes qualities of rural life within an urban context, Grenestedt seeks to reconnect people to their immediate environment while creating spaces for traditional and rural practices to be maintained. The proposed approach  involves strengthening the relationship between indoor and outdoor practices, creating access to typical city functions – food markets, schools, sports facilities, etc – in parallel to functions more typical of rural areas, such as permaculture or animal care.
