By profession Maartje van Eerd is a Human Geographer with extensive experience as a researcher, trainer, and advisor on housing and social development issues. Her PhD research focused on the governance aspects of resettlement in Chennai, India, where she currently coordinates a research project on interventions to improve access to (digital) information and the livelihoods of underprivileged  women and their families. Through this experience in Chennai, she has fostered a collaboration with local institute Anna University, which has led to the recent production of a documentary on the gender impact of housing resettlements. Van Eerd also conducts training and advisory work in the Global South, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, as well as Africa.  Her primary research interest and expertise lie on housing rights, displacement, and resettlement.
