Taking inspiration from local approaches to vernacular architecture, “Open Vernacular”  explores innovative methods of sustainable construction  with special attention to alternative materials, climatic resources, and their ties to local skills. With the objective of developing methods that are simple and realizable even in cases of self-building initiatives, Tobia proposes a modular approach that highlights the transformability of massive construction. Suggesting the combined use of bamboo, masonry, and adobe, she disproves the inadaptability associated with massive structures, demonstrating the possibility of conceiving massive structures that are not only flexible but also adaptable to hosting different functions after all. Considering aspects of sustainability even further, this design brings to light different scales of important climatic considerations, touching upon issues of rainwater overload, flooding, and water depuration.
