Despite the impressive amount of newly constructed dwelling units, shortcomings of condominium housing schemes have drastic consequences within the social and environmental domain.  With focus on the natural environment –  in particular the waterbodies of Addis Ababa – “Rediscovering the Roots of the City: Creating Synergy Between Addis Ababa’s Urban Dwellers and Rivers”  studies the livability of the city following massive declines of urban green spaces and extremely polluted rivers. Bringing to light the vital role that waterbodies play within environmental, social, economic, and technical domains, de Graaf proposes a design that creates a river culture that may reconnect inhabitants with the waterbodies of their city.  This proposal seeks to intertwine the water ecosystem within the urban fabric, contributing to a synergetic environment between the urban dwellers and the rivers of the city.
