Impacts of rapid urbanization in Addis Ababa affect a wide range of audiences, including groups that range in age and gender. Recognizing that female residents may experience this distinctively, “Empowering Urban Females” brings attention to the female-specific struggles of living with a lower social status in a patriarchal society, focusing on the difficulties faced by migrant women in need of appropriate housing and supporting networks. With careful consideration for the cultural transition between rural and city contexts, Bijl brings to light a design process that invests on opportunities to create housing that is gender sensitive and understanding of the migration challenges that are unique to women. Creating safe places that cater to their commonly overlooked needs and fostering spaces that may influence equitable conditions, the proposed design seeks to pave the way for these new urban women.
