The education and research work developed via the Addis Ababa Living Lab project resulted in various outputs, from masters-level innovative design proposals to in-depth doctorate investigations. The Pilot Project is presents a design that integrates such findings, bringing the project’s extensive content into a tangible proposal. Led by Delft-based firm Mecanoo in partnership with Ethiopian office RAAS, this initiative carries on the long standing intercontinental collaboration between TU Delft and EiABC. Through  a participatory process involving relevant local agencies, stakeholders, and of course future residents, the Pilot Project offers a collective housing design that fosters opportunities for (micro) economic activities and a sense of belonging. Taking into account aspects relating to densification, collectivity, and adaptability, the design team brings together a dwelling type that is malleable to multiple block arrangements, creating a base that not only offers the possibility for different courtyard configurations and collective spaces, but is also easily adaptable to ranging sites.
